Hansa Geoluhread advocates for the wishes of his terminally ill mother, Bella Geoluhread, in the face of Carl Budweis, his uncle and her brother.
“Do you think I want this?”
Silence from Uncle Carl.
“I don’t want this, I want to take care of her for the rest of her life, that’s what she wanted, but not anymore. Uncle Carl, she’s tired of being here. I asked her if she feels bad about me caring for her all the time, and she said yes with her eyes, her hands. I tried telling her to stop, but I don’t think I can really do anything about that. I need to respect her wishes. What else am I gonna do? I love her so much, she’s my mom. I already lost dad, and now that I know I have to lose her too, you won’t even let me? That’s fucked up-”
“Watch your language,” spat Carl. Hansa barely saw his face through his tears.
“Watch your language? Do you hear yourself? Watch your language? YOU watch it, Carl!”
